Thinking positive often fails because depression isn’t just a conscious thought problem. It’s deeply rooted in the subconscious mind, which holds unprocessed past emotions (like grief or anger) and runs automatic negative thought patterns. Willpower struggles against this deep programming. True healing requires addressing these subconscious roots, not just the surface thoughts.
Well-meaning friends and family, and even some therapies, focus on changing your conscious thoughts. But depression is not a logical problem. As I often explain to my clients, trying to ‘out-think’ depression is like trying to fix a deep software bug by just changing the text on your computer screen. You’re working on the surface, while the faulty code runs underneath.
Your subconscious mind is that deep operating system. It holds all the unprocessed emotions from your past—the grief, the anger, the hurt—that may be fuelling the depression. It also runs the automatic negative thought patterns that have become so ingrained they feel like the absolute truth. Willpower and positive affirmations are no match for this powerful, automatic programming.
Medication can be an important tool to help manage the chemical imbalances, but it often acts like a ‘cap’ on the symptoms without resolving the underlying cause. Many clients come to me after years on antidepressants, feeling numb but not truly happy. To genuinely heal, we need to go deeper. We need to communicate with the subconscious mind in a language it understands.
So, how can we lift the fog and let the sunshine back in?
We use hypnotherapy, a natural state of deep relaxation, to access the subconscious mind. In this state, we can safely find and release stored negative emotions (often anger or grief), reframe old limiting decisions (like ‘I’m not lovable’), and reconnect you with a compelling positive future. This process helps lift the depression naturally.

- Find and Release Stored Emotions: My favourite definition for this state is that depression is anger without enthusiasm—it’s resignation. Often, depression is the result of anger, grief, or trauma that was suppressed because it felt too overwhelming to deal with at the time. Hypnotherapy provides a safe container to finally release these trapped emotions, which can feel like a heavy weight lifting from your shoulders.
- Reframe Limiting Decisions: In the past, you may have made subconscious decisions like “I’m not lovable” or “It’s not safe to be happy.” We work to find these old decisions and help your subconscious mind understand that they are no longer true, freeing you to create new, empowering beliefs.
- Reconnect with Your Future: Depression robs you of your ability to imagine a positive future. A key part of our work is reconnecting you with your goals, hopes, and dreams. Once your subconscious mind has a compelling, positive direction to move towards, the depression often naturally falls away.
Here’s what research discovered about combining hypnotherapy with depression treatment
The power of this approach is supported by growing clinical evidence. While many think of hypnosis for habits like smoking, its application in treating mood disorders is profound. A key study highlighted the benefits of combining hypnotherapy with traditional Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
The study, published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, found that clients with depression who received CBT combined with hypnosis showed a significantly greater reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms compared to those who only received CBT. The researchers concluded that hypnosis could be a valuable, evidence-based addition to the treatment of depression.
This supports what I have seen for years: when we engage the subconscious mind, the healing process is not only deeper but often much faster.

What does the journey out of depression look like?
While unique to each person, situational depression often sees lasting relief in 4-8 sessions. This includes 1-3 ‘discovery’ sessions to uncover root causes (past events, traumas) and 3-5 ‘healing work’ sessions. We compassionately release the past, re-pattern present responses, and build a compelling future vision, often leading to a noticeable return of enthusiasm and joy.
Your journey will be unique to you, but the path is a well-trodden one. For situational depression, many of my clients find lasting relief in just **4 to 8 sessions**. This will include 1-3 Sessions of “Discovery” where we conversationally examine and uncover the major emotionally charged events, heartbreaks, disappointments, let downs, trust violations, possible traumas and losses that have culminated in you having depression as a form of insulation and protection from other such future experiences. We will then do 3 to 5 actual healing work sessions in addition to those original 1-3 discovery sessions, and bingo ! In 90 % of Depressed people I’ve worked with over the years, the depression fog lifts and the light returns. By that, I mean that your ability to imagine and get excited about a future worth getting out of bed with enthusiasm returns and friends will comment thatt you have rediscovered your smile.
